the Post Breakup Haircut

We see this a lot in the salon. A client comes in, sits in the chair and announces she’s ready to chop it all off! For stylists, that can be personally exciting to hear. It’s a chance for them to do something a bit outside the norm of “just a trim,” and lets them showcase their creative talents. For the client there is usually a lot more going on beyond just wanting to change up their look. We call it the “post breakup haircut,” a title given anytime a woman changes her hair after going through a significant life change. Good or bad.

It’s natural to want to change your hair after a big life change. Changing jobs, having a baby, moving, changes in your daily routine, and of course break ups. Dramatic hair changes are a way of shedding the past and moving on. There is a metaphorical lightness that comes with chopping your locks. A haircut can be a fresh start, and a way to get rid of whatever baggage we’ve been walking around with. It’s a way to exercise some control when other things seem to be outside of our ability to influence.

We have done many post breakup haircuts over the years. It’s an emotional journey that we are very aware of and try to address with our clients before making the first commitment chop. There is something cathartic about a drastic cut after a break up, like you are cutting off dead weight and becoming free of it. You find yourself on a mission to redefine yourself, and a fast and easy way to do that is by cutting your hair and/or changing the color. After ending a relationship, women may cut their hair as a way of rejecting who she was expected to be. Our hair is the most visually defining feature we have. It’s the one accessory that doesn’t change day to day, like shoes or a bag.

Not all dramatic haircuts are due to life changes. Personally, I have a yearly cycle of growing my hair out for a while, and then chopping it all off. However, the first time I chopped it all off was a much different story. Immediately after leaving the salon I cried, all the way home I cried, and probably cried for a few days after. I was not mourning the loss of my hair…I just broke up with my fiancé. So, I did the post breakup haircut.

Now to address the elephant in the room…COVID-19. This pandemic has put all of us through some weird and unexpected life changes. We grieved the loss of our old life, we felt depressed, then felt guilty about being depressed, we made bread, started gardens, unintentionally killed those gardens, and gave our dogs the best 2 months of their lives. We look in the mirror before our first venture out to socialize…Wait, where did those 15 extra pounds come from?! I didn’t realize I had THAT many grays! Where are my hats?! Never mind, I’m gonna just stay home with my dogs.

We did a lot of big hair changes, or “post breakup haircuts, COVID edition” our first week back open, and it was fun to see how smiley and bouncy our clients were when leaving. It’s been therapeutic for us as well as our clients. It’s refreshing to come back to work with all this infectious bounciness.

Fall Hair Trends

With fall already here, you’re probably ready to crack out your favorite sweater, and head over to your favorite coffee shop to snag a Pumpkin Spice Latte. But, by golly what about your hair? You have all the makings of the perfect fall style in all the departments but your hair. Continue reading, because we are about to break it all down and discover this year’s Fall hair trends.

Bold and Beautiful

Feeling bold? Listen up, this trend is for you. Yellow! Yellow hair is something we saw slowly creep in during the summer time, but is now overpowering the fall hair trend game. It is mainly accompanied by a nice deep shadow root, with more of the yellowing being a balayage, ombre look. This does come as a surprise considering most are trying to cover the yellow in their hair, but this fall season we are embracing and enhancing it!

Rose, Copper, Red – What’s in a Name?

Now, I get it, bold yellow may not be the go to for most. So, if you still want to have a little fun, but keep it toned down, then this palette is for you! Copper, red, amber, rose gold. These warm golden tones, bring style and attention while still keeping it simple and professional. This color also looks great with a few blonde highlights. It’s the perfect rich fall shade.

Sultry and Toasty

Now, the new Fall hair trend that has hit instagram and taken it by storm is, Toasted Coconut hair. What is this Toasted Coconut goodness you might be asking? Allow me to explain. Over the past year we have seen a lot of soft blended balayage, but this color puts a modern 2018 twist on it.Â Toasted coconut is less about intermingling the brown and blonde hair colors, and more about gradually fading them into each other. For those who love the blonde/brown combo and looking for a striking, fashionable change, this is the one for you!!

*Disclaimer: Looks similar to these done on dark hair will likely require multiple appointments to lighten it this way to prevent too much damage to the hair. Of course, using Olaplex is a must in my opinion. Ever notice that most pictures of color blended looks the hair is styled with texture? That enhances the depth and dimension. So keep in mind that it becomes a different look on un-styled or un-textured hair. Not necessarily a bad look, just different than what you see on Pinterest and Instagram. Remember, pictures online are a snapshot of the best elements of life. They don’t tell the whole story.

Lived In and Lovely

The trend that still continues to rein superior and stand the test of time is the shadow root. This hair trend is still going strong. It is an easy, lived in look that keeps you from having to run to the salon as frequently. It also adds some boho lived in style. We are seeing the shadow root accompanied with balayage, toned down to a nice caramel swirl. Mmmm, we’ll take that as a latte too!

Simply Stunning

Does your hair need a break from the bleach? Well you are in luck because rich brown hair color is on the radar. Having a rich multidimensional brown colored hair is definitely something we will be seeing a lot of. Dark chocolate, mocha, and coffee tones. Geez, I must really want a latte!

What About the Cut?

When it comes to how to cut your hair, bold, angled bobs and lobs with layers to add in a bit of lived in magic to your hair is still hanging in strong. The cut is sophisticated, stylish, and offers multiple styling options. From textured to smooth, straight to wavy, and everything in between. The key is customizing the finish and cut to your unique face structure. Leave the cut to the pros, and let us teach you how to get the finish you love.

Now, this one might set you back a bit, but the mullet is back and in full swing. I repeat the mullet is back!! We have been seeing a lot of this popping up especially out in LA, and it is surely making its way over here to the east coast. Don’t worry, we won’t have a bunch of Billy Ray Cyrus look-a-likes walking around. The modern mullet is shaggy, sometimes accompanied by baby bangs, and is for that bold, boss-babe who does not want to conform to what beauty has been in recent years. So the mullet is back, and we think it might be here to stay.

Maybe this fall you are feeling like you need a change, and that change is a fringe! But, you are not sure you want to commit to the blunt look just yet. Well you are in luck because curtain bangs are making moves. This is perfect for someone who is looking for a change, but not ready for the commitment to a blunt fringe. Ever been tempted to cut or trim up your own bangs? Don’t. For the rebels, here’s how to do it. But seriously, just don’t.

Ask Your Stylist Stupid Questions! You’ll thank yourself later

Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist

There are many times when I hear, “This is a stupid question, but…” Let me start off by saying, there are no stupid questions when it comes to your interaction with your stylist. I have a stupid question, why all the fear of feeling stupid? More importantly, why all the fear to ask your stylist questions?

The only people I can blame for this are your stylists. Nobody wants to feel like they don’t know something. I’m sure the two people reading this infant blog would agree. You’re sitting in a room and someone is talking and everyone nods in agreement and you do too, even though you have no idea what everyone is agreeing to. Who wants to be the weirdo who interrupts with a stupid question? That’s fine, but things change when you’re the consumer.

You didn’t go to school for this, how would you know?

Your stylist should make you feel comfortable about asking any kind of question. You are purchasing a service and you should be as well informed about what you are receiving as possible. If your stylist makes you feel dumb it is likely a shortcoming with their ability to answer your question at all. Anyone who has been in my chair knows that most of the time when they don’t ask questions, they end up listening to piles of information I give freely to make sure they understand as much as possible. So please, don’t ever feel uncomfortable asking questions. Not only should you ask questions, asking them makes you a smart consumer.

I’m here to help

Of course some questions are going to get you the information you want faster and more easily. So I put together some questions to get you started.

What’s included in the price? Add on sales have unfortunately become the norm in my industry. With that, services that were once included in the price of a haircut became an additional cost. Want your hair dried after your cut? That’ll be $20. Want it styled? Another $20-$30. So when you go to get you’re hair done, be sure to know exactly what you’re buying. If you’ve been to done by Dēroc, then you’ll know our prices for haircuts include a wash, custom cut, blow dry AND iron work.

Will it look good on me? Ask your stylist How many of you brought this picture to your stylist of Jennifer Aniston’s iconic asymmetrical bob, only to go home miserable because you looked nothing like Jennifer Aniston after? A good stylist should custom fit the celebrity look you’re craving specifically for your face. A haircut should accentuate your best features, while downplaying your least favorite features.

How much work will go into styling it at home? If you typically spend 10 minutes on you hair every morning, make sure your stylist knows this before jumping into a sleak graduated bob that needs to be styled in order to show off artistry of the cut. Communicate how much time you put into your hair each day so your stylist can craft a cut specifically for your life.

How short will it be when it’s dry? An inch is an inch, right? Wrong. An inch can be interpreted differently to different people. Be sure to be visual when expressing how short you’re willing to go. Either use your fingers to show what your inch is, or just show where on your body you want the shortest layers to fall.
Stay away from saying, “Do whatever you want” to your stylist. Unless you’re willing go short, like really short. If you are that adventurous, find a salon that has a “no say, no pay” policy like mine. If you give me full creative liberty on your hair, then I won’t charge you for letting me do my thing because at that point, the cut is for me as much as it is for you.

Is it time to stop coloring and make the transition to gray hair?

As we age, the graying of your hair is bound to happen, and it’s different for everyone. Some start as soon as their 20s and as late as their 70s, but just about everyone will end up with gray hair at some point in their lives. This piece is going to help you decide if the time is right to stop coloring your hair and make the transition to gray hair.

Why does it turn gray in the first place?

Easy answer: Genetics! Without getting into too much science and detail, because you know I can, let’s give you the basics. You can also read more information here.

Cells called melanocytes manufacture and deposit pigment into the hair as it grows (anagen phase). At the end of this phase, the hair stops growing for a few months (telogen phase) before it is ejected from the follicle and the follicle goes dormant. There is a phase in-between those two but we don’t need that here. Some of those melanocytes die every hair cycle. When the stem cells making the melanocytes run out, so does color production.

Stress IS NOT A FACTOR! Sorry for yelling. Please stop blaming your children or your in-laws for your gray hair. It’s just not their fault. You can blame them for your hair falling out though, as stress can increase hair loss. BE CALM! Sorry, again.

Is it time to stop coloring?

Well that depends. Here are some pros and cons for you to help in the decision making process of the transition to gray hair.

Pros:

First of all, the financial benefit is obvious here. Money is saved by not coloring your hair.
Chemical damage is minimized. The haircolor service you get will determine the amount of damage. With gray hair already dull and coarse you may find styling your hair easier without the additional damage of hair coloring, also who doesn’t want healthy hair?!
The two pros above also create a time savings. Less time spent in the salon or, gasp, coloring your own hair, and less time spent styling.
Especially relevant, all of the great compliments. “I love your natural gray!” “Wow, how brave of you!” “This look totally suits you!” You’ll love hearing these.

Cons:

Ugh, that grow out/in period. Waiting for it the color to grow out and the gray to grow in can be a long process and it may be easier just to cut it short at some point.
You may feel like it ages you. Nobody wants to feel old. That’s the whole reason for covering your grays in the first place, isn’t it?
There may be some additional costs. You may want to start your hair color’s transition by “blending” the colored and gray hair. As a result, this can be expensive, some of the options here may cost more than just coloring your roots.
Especially relevant, all of the great compliments. “I love your natural gray!” “Wow, how brave of you!” “This look totally suits you!” These will probably suck to hear sometimes.

Using these lists should help you figure out if growing into your gray hair is right for you. Good Luck!

WAIT! Those lists didn’t help! How do I know when?!?

This one is really easy to answer because you already know. Take a good long look at your hair and your soul and the answer will come to you.

Finally, making this decision isn’t easy, so it needs to feel and be the right time for you. Prom night anyone? Ahem… as I was saying: You’ll know before anyone else, you will have had it with coloring, and it will just feel right. Maybe, your personal aesthetic taste will change. Most of all, the decision comes from within, whether you do it or don’t. By all means ask questions, get opinions, start to do it then stop. However you go about it, it will be in your eyes and mind and heart that it is the right time.

Furthermore, when you feel confident enough to do it, you will.
