the Post Breakup Haircut

We see this a lot in the salon. A client comes in, sits in the chair and announces she’s ready to chop it all off! For stylists, that can be personally exciting to hear. It’s a chance for them to do something a bit outside the norm of “just a trim,” and lets them showcase their creative talents. For the client there is usually a lot more going on beyond just wanting to change up their look. We call it the “post breakup haircut,” a title given anytime a woman changes her hair after going through a significant life change. Good or bad.

It’s natural to want to change your hair after a big life change. Changing jobs, having a baby, moving, changes in your daily routine, and of course break ups. Dramatic hair changes are a way of shedding the past and moving on. There is a metaphorical lightness that comes with chopping your locks. A haircut can be a fresh start, and a way to get rid of whatever baggage we’ve been walking around with. It’s a way to exercise some control when other things seem to be outside of our ability to influence.

We have done many post breakup haircuts over the years. It’s an emotional journey that we are very aware of and try to address with our clients before making the first commitment chop. There is something cathartic about a drastic cut after a break up, like you are cutting off dead weight and becoming free of it. You find yourself on a mission to redefine yourself, and a fast and easy way to do that is by cutting your hair and/or changing the color. After ending a relationship, women may cut their hair as a way of rejecting who she was expected to be. Our hair is the most visually defining feature we have. It’s the one accessory that doesn’t change day to day, like shoes or a bag.

Not all dramatic haircuts are due to life changes. Personally, I have a yearly cycle of growing my hair out for a while, and then chopping it all off. However, the first time I chopped it all off was a much different story. Immediately after leaving the salon I cried, all the way home I cried, and probably cried for a few days after. I was not mourning the loss of my hair…I just broke up with my fiancé. So, I did the post breakup haircut.

Now to address the elephant in the room…COVID-19. This pandemic has put all of us through some weird and unexpected life changes. We grieved the loss of our old life, we felt depressed, then felt guilty about being depressed, we made bread, started gardens, unintentionally killed those gardens, and gave our dogs the best 2 months of their lives. We look in the mirror before our first venture out to socialize…Wait, where did those 15 extra pounds come from?! I didn’t realize I had THAT many grays! Where are my hats?! Never mind, I’m gonna just stay home with my dogs.

We did a lot of big hair changes, or “post breakup haircuts, COVID edition” our first week back open, and it was fun to see how smiley and bouncy our clients were when leaving. It’s been therapeutic for us as well as our clients. It’s refreshing to come back to work with all this infectious bounciness.

A haircut can be a fresh start and a way to exercise some control when other things seem to be outside of our influence. Fall Hair Trends

With fall already here, you’re probably ready to crack out your favorite sweater, and head over to your favorite coffee shop to snag a Pumpkin Spice Latte. But, by golly what about your hair? You have all the makings of the perfect fall style in all the departments but your hair. Continue reading, because we are about to break it all down and discover this year’s Fall hair trends.

Bold and Beautiful

Feeling bold? Listen up, this trend is for you. Yellow! Yellow hair is something we saw slowly creep in during the summer time, but is now overpowering the fall hair trend game. It is mainly accompanied by a nice deep shadow root, with more of the yellowing being a balayage, ombre look. This does come as a surprise considering most are trying to cover the yellow in their hair, but this fall season we are embracing and enhancing it!

Rose, Copper, Red – What’s in a Name?

Now, I get it, bold yellow may not be the go to for most. So, if you still want to have a little fun, but keep it toned down, then this palette is for you! Copper, red, amber, rose gold. These warm golden tones, bring style and attention while still keeping it simple and professional. This color also looks great with a few blonde highlights. It’s the perfect rich fall shade.

Sultry and Toasty

Now, the new Fall hair trend that has hit instagram and taken it by storm is, Toasted Coconut hair. What is this Toasted Coconut goodness you might be asking? Allow me to explain. Over the past year we have seen a lot of soft blended balayage, but this color puts a modern 2018 twist on it.Â Toasted coconut is less about intermingling the brown and blonde hair colors, and more about gradually fading them into each other. For those who love the blonde/brown combo and looking for a striking, fashionable change, this is the one for you!!

*Disclaimer: Looks similar to these done on dark hair will likely require multiple appointments to lighten it this way to prevent too much damage to the hair. Of course, using Olaplex is a must in my opinion. Ever notice that most pictures of color blended looks the hair is styled with texture? That enhances the depth and dimension. So keep in mind that it becomes a different look on un-styled or un-textured hair. Not necessarily a bad look, just different than what you see on Pinterest and Instagram. Remember, pictures online are a snapshot of the best elements of life. They don’t tell the whole story.

Lived In and Lovely

The trend that still continues to rein superior and stand the test of time is the shadow root. This hair trend is still going strong. It is an easy, lived in look that keeps you from having to run to the salon as frequently. It also adds some boho lived in style. We are seeing the shadow root accompanied with balayage, toned down to a nice caramel swirl. Mmmm, we’ll take that as a latte too!

Simply Stunning

Does your hair need a break from the bleach? Well you are in luck because rich brown hair color is on the radar. Having a rich multidimensional brown colored hair is definitely something we will be seeing a lot of. Dark chocolate, mocha, and coffee tones. Geez, I must really want a latte!

What About the Cut?

When it comes to how to cut your hair, bold, angled bobs and lobs with layers to add in a bit of lived in magic to your hair is still hanging in strong. The cut is sophisticated, stylish, and offers multiple styling options. From textured to smooth, straight to wavy, and everything in between. Now, this one might set you back a bit, but the mullet is back and in full swing. I repeat the mullet is back!! We have been seeing a lot of this popping up especially out in LA, and it is surely making its way over here to the east coast. The modern mullet is shaggy, sometimes accompanied by baby bangs, and is for that bold, boss-babe who does not want to conform to what beauty has been in recent years. So the mullet is back, and we think it might be here to stay.

Is It Really Cruelty Free?

Cruelty Free. No Animal Testing. Vegan. This Product is Not Tested on Animals.

I’m sure you have seen these labels on many products in the beauty industry. They all sound good, right? Well, labels can be deceiving. I am going to help you decipher what these labels mean, and what you need to know when buying beauty products.

The Rules

First we need to understand the rules of animal testing in the the beauty industry. Let me point out that there are rules regarding animal testing, which means animal testing is completely legal, and still a common practice. There is only one Federal law that applies to animals in research. While there have been amendments over the years since it was enacted in 1966, it still provides only minimal protection for certain species. It excludes species such as rats, mice, and birds bred for research—who together constitute an estimated 90-95% of animals in laboratories. It’s Personal

It’s hard to think about, but dogs are the main animal used for cosmetic testing. There are plenty of heart wrenching stories showing the very ugly side of the beauty industry. I am not here to show you horrifying pictures to make my case, so rest easy. Deciding to go cruelty free in your personal shopping is a personal decision that everyone has to make on their own. I have personally made the choice to no longer buy from companies that still test on animals. For multiple reasons, but honestly, I just can’t look at my own dogs while doing my hair and make up knowing what other dogs have gone through just for my beautification.

Come on, look at those faces!

As a salon owner I knew that I could be a big contributor to animal testing in the beauty industry. I didn’t want that! It’s a bit of a balancing act trying to stick to my own convictions while not pushing them on to everyone. Owning a salon while trying to avoid animal testing can be a bit of a challenge because most main stream product companies do not regulate animal testing. It is extra work and extra money, I get it… However, there are cruelty free professional hair care products out there, and we found one!

We are proud to carry a product line that has PETA’s cruelty free logo and the Leaping Bunny logo. Healium Hair is a Florida based company, with everything being made in the US, and went through the rigorous processes of getting verified by these organizations. In addition to all of this, the products themselves are high quality and work great!

All Labels Are Not Created Equal

There are no specific laws that exist regarding cruelty-free labeling of products. So companies can take liberties. It is unlikely that a company would put blatantly false information regarding its animal-testing practices on its products. However, be aware that statements on labels may be misleading and not fully informative. It turns out that “Not tested on animals” and “Cruelty free” may only mean that the finished products aren’t tested on animals. However, animal testing could have been done on the ingredients used in the products. It also does not mean the product is free from animal products. Same goes for those that say “Certified Vegan” but could still have been tested on animals. Why all the loopholes? Well, the FDA has not approved a legal definition that binds these terms to a certain set of criteria, making it difficult to define.

Then There’s China

One more thing to make all this more confusing, China. China is one of the last major countries that requires animal testing on hair, skin and cosmetic goods. Salons and manufacturers want their products to be recognized as cruelty-free because the demand for such products is on the rise, especially among millennials. So, if companies wish to sell their products in China, they must submit to the animal-testing rule. While companies might not perform animal tests themselves, they’re obliged to provide samples and pay the government to conduct them. On the bright side, China has started to work with U.S. non profits to train Chinese scientists in tests using reconstructed cells. This will put them on track to eliminate animal testing all together. Yay!

While laws, or lack there of, are not very helpful if you’re looking to avoid animal testing, there are other organizations out there to help. I will tell you about some of them, and what their logos and stamps of approval mean. However, I encourage you to do your own research to make informed purchasing decisions. Each of the organizations below also have lists of their approved companies.

Not Tested on Animals Verified by CCF (Choose Cruelty Free)

None of its products and ingredients have ever been tested on animals by it, by anyone on its behalf, by its suppliers or anyone on their behalf and must not contain any ingredients derived specifically from killing an animal or provided as a by-product from killed animals. CCF also will not accredit companies unless all parent and subsidiaries are also accredited

Cruelty Free Verified by PETA

Companies listed either signed PETA’s statement of assurance or provided a statement verifying that they do not conduct or commission any animal tests on ingredients, formulations, or finished products and that they pledge not to do so in the future.

Not Tested on Animals Verified by The Leaping Bunny

The company and their ingredient suppliers do not conduct or commission animal testing of their products. An independent assessor must audit the company once every three years. Or, in the case of smaller companies, a “spot-check,” commissioned by the CCIC and performed by an accredited auditor.

This product and ingredients do not contain any animal product, by-product or derivative and must not involve testing of any sort on animals by the manufacturers or on its behalf, or by any third parties.

Being environmentally friendly and opposing animal cruelty is not as simple to follow through as it should be. It is an admiral decision that requires a little extra effort in day to day purchasing. So, I hope this article helps, and remember to do your own research! There are so many sources out there to help guide you in your quest to abolish animal testing.

Giving to Local Nonprofit Organizations

Learning & Loving to Give

There are many local nonprofit organizations out there, and they are all addressing a need in the world and local communities. That’s a good thing, right? But can one person or even one small business make a difference? Not everyone has hundreds, thousands, or millions of dollars to give away to make a big impact, and that can make us feel powerless.

Don’t’ despair! It is easy to forget just how many people there are in the community, and how powerful our pocket change can become when pooled together. Think how effective Jonas Salk was one year before he found the cure for polio. He wasn’t at that point, but that doesn’t mean you would have not wanted to invest in him.

Why Give?

As a business, charitable contributions have numerous benefits such as tax deductions, employee morale, & marketing. However, the most important one is obvious: you should give back to your community.

Local nonprofit organizations help strengthen entire communities, by encouraging local economic activity and creating jobs.

Research has revealed that spending money on others actually makes us happier than spending it on ourselves. In addition, giving to others can actually make us healthier.

So what are we waiting for?

How do you chose a local non-profit to give to?

It is wonderful that there are so many local nonprofit organizations out there helping communities. However, that can make choosing one to give to a daunting task. For some, it is due to being personally impacted by something like cancer, or having a passion for rescuing animals. Within my own family the causes are diverse. Our lives have been touched by breast cancer, Alzheimer’s, veterans with PTSD, domestic violence, diabetes, autism, rescuing dogs and more! We are all passionate about supporting the causes that have impacted our lives.

So how do we choose?!

Give the people what they want

At our hair salon in Cape Coral, done by Dēroc, we have set out to donate a portion of our sales to local nonprofit organizations. With so many out there, and so many causes near and dear to all our hearts, we have decided not to decide. Seriously, how can we make a decision on behalf of the whole community? We can’t. So, we are letting the community decide how we donate our money.

Starting April 1st, done by Dēroc will be donating a portion of our sales to local nonprofit organizations suggested by our guests. We will choose 3 local nonprofit organizations each quarter to be displayed in the salon. Each time a guest makes a transaction at the salon, he or she has an opportunity to vote for 1 of the 3 non-profits we are showcasing. We then allocate a portion of our sales based on the number of votes each organization receives during. That’s it. We won’t solicit money from anyone, just their input.

Stop by the studio, email, call, Facebook, DM, text, write or just shout at us to suggest a local nonprofit organization you’d like us to support!

EMERGENCY USE ONLY!

Have you been tempted by DIY bangs? Probably, right? Well, keep reading.

DISCLAIMER: Never cut your own bangs under any circumstance! Cutting face framing fringes are for professional use only. You should never attempt them on your own, at home, all alone, with no one to stop you. Most stylists will trim them for free if you are a regular client, otherwise, the cost is very low and takes only a few minutes. Proceed with caution, at your own risk. Good Luck!

Now that I’ve gotten that out of the way, you should go back and read it again.

I have been in this business for a while now, almost 20 years. As a result I have seen almost all of my clients, that wear a bang, come in with DIY bangs. Even the ones that would sit in my chair and exclaim, “I would never cut them myself!” First of all, I can tell, no need to lie to me. Secondly, don’t be afraid to ask me, or whoever your stylist is, before doing something you can’t erase, like DIY bangs.

I know eventually you will try to trim your own bangs. Certainly, something will happen. The universe will be against you and you’ll just have to do it. I’ve already given a disclaimer, so you know how I feel about it. That said, I wrote this post as a guide for you to cut the length, let me repeat, the length only, and some direction. In no way will you ever see an advisory on how to texturize, shape, or personalize your fringes. That requires specific hand and body positions not attainable at home, with kitchen shears, in front of a dimly lit mirror. Seriously heed my warning above. However, if you absolutely can’t wait those extra two weeks, if you’re one of those twice a year clients, or if you’re drunk with friends, feeling dangerous and experimental, then this post is for you.

DIY Rules

The diagram my daughter and I have created below should give you everything you need to know for DIY bangs.

First of all, the GRAY area in the graphic below represents the classic bang, or fringe area. It is a triangular section of hair starting at the high point of your forehead and expanding down to the outside corner of each eye. This will be the hair you hold and cut. Be careful not to take in hair from the hair line at the temples in this section. Now, clip the rest of your hair out of the way.

Secondly, the PINK area is where you will collect and hold the hair. Comb your hair with as little tension as possible. A light touch here goes a long way in avoiding mistakes. Hold your hair in the manner shown in the illustration as close to your skin as possible. Do not lift away from your face. Lifting will cause you unwanted texture and graduation. This is a dangerous game we are playing.

In figure A you can see the hair is moved (over-directed) to your right and collected over the right eye. Cutting the hair here will give movement in the opposite direction, making your bangs push to the left. This is for the side sweeping fringes we all love. You want it to go the other way? Just flip it!

In figure B you can see the hair is collected in the center of the nose and between the eyes. Cutting the hair here will give you the straight across look that wraps around your forehead and blends into the length.

In figure C you can see the hair is allowed to fall naturally and is slightly directed to both sides of the forehead. Cutting your hair here will give a more “mod” look to your fringe by encouraging it to bounce in the areas of recession. This is the most complex of all the examples, because it is the one most shaped by you. Above all, please be careful.

Straight and Steady…

Finally, the —–dotted line—– represents cutting a straight line, parallel to the floor. Yes, a straight cut line here will give you the curved shapes in the illustration. The shape of your hairline and head combined with the direction of your hair before cutting dictates all that movement. Now you’ll want to cut your bangs way longer than you want them. This will give you an opportunity to fix all the other mistakes you have just made. In case you were wondering, your first mistake was deciding to cut your own bangs. Repeat as necessary until you achieve your desired length.

Most people blow dry their on a regular, sometimes daily basis. There is a blow dryer in every household, and a wide variety of dryers to choose from. Most people are not following the best practices for this tool, simply out of a lack of education. Here I will give you an introductory blow drying education, teaching you how to use a blow dryer and how to understand the technology. Here’s a look at what went into designing new bow dryer technology from Dyson.

Time for Change

The tools you use to dry your hair have changed. Why hasn’t the method changed?

Well it has. However, most stylists have not. This means you haven’t changed the method you use at home to dry your hair. If you remember my washing hair blog then blow drying education the next step for you.

Modern blow dryers don’t need to be excessively hot to dry your hair more quickly. They borrow from the heating and cooling industry and use physics to speed things up.

What is Ionic

Most new blow dryers will have the word “ionic” written in the box somewhere. But what does that mean?

Well the negative ions produced by your dryer go about breaking clusters of water molecules into smaller and smaller groups. This allows the water on the exterior of your hair to dry faster by blowing away extra moisture in the airflow and evaporating other water more quickly. With less water to dry less heat is needed and you won’t over heat your hair. In theory anyway.

Most people and stylists still go about aggressively drying out the hair the same way they always have except with a more expensive tool. Rather, go easy and use your hands to shake your hair while drying. This will help to retain water moisture within the hair strand making it silkier, shinier and more manageable.

Go with the flow…AIR FLOW! Ha! Ahem, anyway, that brings us to the next technology.

What is Far infrared

It is a specific range of wavelengths in the non-visible electromagnetic spectrum. Basically some invisible light.

Modern dryers that incorporate ate this technology use it to create “healthy heat.” This happens because the this particular form of light is absorbed by the body and hair then becomes heat energy. This helps to retain the most moisture in the hair and the health benefits, while still being researched could be huge.

Look it up. It’s a lot to read though. Math and stuff, ya know what I mean?

Technique Technique Technique

Consequently, those thermal benefits are great and useless without the proper technique.

You will want to keep your hair warm but not hot during the drying process. This is why I always suggest using your hands as much as possible to constantly check the temperature of your hair. This doesn’t mean you wont dry it out, it just means you won’t burn it anymore.

You want to work your style to a point of dried off. That is miles different from dried out and can be achieved by stopping when it feels dry but not hot. Use more heat at the roots (the hair here is heather and can sustain more continued drying) and less towards the ends (which are older and more susceptible to damage).

Above all else, practice makes better here. The more you employ these techniques and technologies the faster, easier, and healthier your hair will be and style. And the next time new science makes its way into the beauty industry you’ll be better prepared to change.

Don’t be afraid to ask your stylist

There are many times when I hear, “This is a stupid question, but…” Let me start off by saying, there are no stupid questions when it comes to your interaction with your stylist. I have a stupid question, why all the fear of feeling stupid? More importantly, why all the fear to ask your stylist questions?

The only people I can blame for this are your stylists. Nobody wants to feel like they don’t know something. I’m sure the two people reading this infant blog would agree. You’re sitting in a room and someone is talking and everyone nods in agreement and you do too, even though you have no idea what everyone is agreeing to. Who wants to be the weirdo who interrupts with a stupid question? That’s fine, but things change when you’re the consumer.

You didn’t go to school for this, how would you know?

Your stylist should make you feel comfortable about asking any kind of question. You are purchasing a service and you should be as well informed about what you are receiving as possible. If your stylist makes you feel dumb it is likely a shortcoming with their ability to answer your question at all. Anyone who has been in my chair knows that most of the time when they don’t ask questions, they end up listening to piles of information I give freely to make sure they understand as much as possible. So please, don’t ever feel uncomfortable asking questions. Not only should you ask questions, asking them makes you a smart consumer.

I’m here to help

Of course some questions are going to get you the information you want faster and more easily. So I put together some questions to get you started.

What’s included in the price? Add on sales have unfortunately become the norm in my industry. With that, services that were once included in the price of a haircut became an additional cost. Want your hair dried after your cut? That’ll be $20. Want it styled? Another $20-$30. So when you go to get you’re hair done, be sure to know exactly what you’re buying. If you’ve been to done by Dēroc, then you’ll know our prices for haircuts include a wash, custom cut, blow dry AND iron work.

Will it look good on me? Ask your stylist How many of you brought this picture to your stylist of Jennifer Aniston’s iconic asymmetrical bob, only to go home miserable because you looked nothing like Jennifer Aniston after? A good stylist should custom fit the celebrity look you’re craving specifically for your face. A haircut should accentuate your best features, while downplaying your least favorite features.

How much work will go into styling it at home? If you typically spend 10 minutes on you hair every morning, make sure your stylist knows this before jumping into a sleak graduated bob that needs to be styled in order to show off artistry of the cut. Communicate how much time you put into your hair each day so your stylist can craft a cut specifically for your life.

How short will it be when it’s dry? An inch is an inch, right? Wrong. An inch can be interpreted differently to different people. Be sure to be visual when expressing how short you’re willing to go. Either use your fingers to show what your inch is, or just show where on your body you want the shortest layers to fall.
Stay away from saying, “Do whatever you want” to your stylist. Unless you’re willing go short, like really short. If you are that adventurous, find a salon that has a “no say, no pay” policy like mine. If you give me full creative liberty on your hair, then I won’t charge you for letting me do my thing because at that point, the cut is for me as much as it is for you.

Is it time to stop coloring and make the transition to gray hair?

As we age, the graying of your hair is bound to happen, and it’s different for everyone. Some start as soon as their 20s and as late as their 70s, but just about everyone will end up with gray hair at some point in their lives. This piece is going to help you decide if the time is right to stop coloring your hair and make the transition to gray hair.

Why does it turn gray in the first place?

Easy answer: Genetics! Without getting into too much science and detail, because you know I can, let’s give you the basics. You can also read more information here.

Cells called melanocytes manufacture and deposit pigment into the hair as it grows (anagen phase). At the end of this phase, the hair stops growing for a few months (telogen phase) before it is ejected from the follicle and the follicle goes dormant. There is a phase in-between those two but we don’t need that here. Some of those melanocytes die every hair cycle. When the stem cells making the melanocytes run out, so does color production.

Stress IS NOT A FACTOR! Sorry for yelling. Please stop blaming your children or your in-laws for your gray hair. It’s just not their fault. You can blame them for your hair falling out though, as stress can increase hair loss. BE CALM! Sorry, again.

Is it time to stop coloring?

Well that depends. Here are some pros and cons for you to help in the decision making process of the transition to gray hair.

Pros:

First of all, the financial benefit is obvious here. Money is saved by not coloring your hair.
Chemical damage is minimized. The haircolor service you get will determine the amount of damage. With gray hair already dull and coarse you may find styling your hair easier without the additional damage of hair coloring, also who doesn’t want healthy hair?!
The two pros above also create a time savings. Less time spent in the salon or, gasp, coloring your own hair, and less time spent styling.
Especially relevant, all of the great compliments. “I love your natural gray!” “Wow, how brave of you!” “This look totally suits you!” You’ll love hearing these.

Cons:

Ugh, that grow out/in period. Waiting for it the color to grow out and the gray to grow in can be a long process and it may be easier just to cut it short at some point.
You may feel like it ages you. Nobody wants to feel old. That’s the whole reason for covering your grays in the first place, isn’t it?
There may be some additional costs. You may want to start your hair color’s transition by “blending” the colored and gray hair. As a result, this can be expensive, some of the options here may cost more than just coloring your roots.
Especially relevant, all of the great compliments. “I love your natural gray!” “Wow, how brave of you!” “This look totally suits you!” These will probably suck to hear sometimes.

Using these lists should help you figure out if growing into your gray hair is right for you. Good Luck!

WAIT! Those lists didn’t help! How do I know when?!?

This one is really easy to answer because you already know. Take a good long look at your hair and your soul and the answer will come to you.

Finally, making this decision isn’t easy, so it needs to feel and be the right time for you. Prom night anyone? Ahem… as I was saying: You’ll know before anyone else, you will have had it with coloring, and it will just feel right. Maybe, your personal aesthetic taste will change. Most of all, the decision comes from within, whether you do it or don’t. By all means ask questions, get opinions, start to do it then stop. However you go about it, it will be in your eyes and mind and heart that it is the right time.

Furthermore, when you feel confident enough to do it, you will.

Stop buying healthy hair hype and change your routine.

When I started in hairdressing, 18 years ago, there were basic and simple ways to try to achieve healthy hair. None of them really worked and were often used as ways to stretch an appointment out because you didn’t quite finish up with your other guest yet. “Let’s put this deep conditioner on your hair. Sit under the dryer for ten minutes,” we would say.

This action helped us catch up and certainly came at no cost to you. Now though, it seems there is a charge for everything. Nickels and dimes. How did having healthy hair suddenly require so much more money?

It’s a recession!

Around 2008, clientele started extending the time between visits and I noticed a strong push in my industry for add-on sales. They flooded all of our education and professional trade publications. “Get another $5 out of your clientele with this product/service.” “You can easily charge another $25 for this service.” It was a recession! I can’t for the life of me figure out why we all bought into making people spend money instead of save it. Well, it felt wrong to me and I needed to change it. I know, I know, get to free healthy hair already. OKAY!

It’s all about technique!

Healthy hair starts with how you handle it. Like anything, there are things done well and things done great. Practice and experimentation with your cleansing and styling routine will make all the difference over time. If you’ve read this far expecting a product or home remedy with mayonnaise and incense, you can click away now. That’s not happening and it will never work. You will need six to eight weeks to feel the full effect of these methods. That’s not to say you won’t notice an improvement immediately. You will! It will be even better in six to eight weeks though.

Got to get it wet!

Water moisture is an incredibly important ingredient for healthy hair. It’s surprising how little effort goes into getting that moisture into your hair. Maybe we need to change how you think about washing your hair. I want you to imagine that your hair is porous like a sponge.

• Compress and squeeze your hair in running water. This will soak the hair through to the medulla. Just like a dry kitchen sponge, it takes some working to soak it thoroughly.

• When you feel it become incredibly soft, you have completely saturated your hair.

Now wash it!

This is the time to wash your hair. Yes, there is a technique to this as well. Most people over wash their hair, causing a loss of essential fatty acids (the other moisture) and vitamins and minerals. Increased color fading can happen here too.

• Rub the shampoo over your hands first. Spread it over your palms and between your fingers. This prevents having to much in one place.
• Massage into the scalp. Don’t worry about shampooing through the ends of your hair, especially if it is long. This hair is the oldest and most fragile. Its also the cleanest hair. You don’t wash a jacket every time you wear it outside because it doesn’t get soiled by you. Your scalp has all the oil and dirt, so unless you had your hair fall into your pancake syrup, don’t wash the ends. DO NOT rub the ends of your hair together or on top of your hair. This damages and dulls the cuticle layer.
• Shampoo works like a detergent. As you rinse, all the cleansing the rest of your hair needs will happennow. This action helps to retain those important natural elements of your hair.
• Rinse thoroughly. Get all of it out of your hair always working from the roots to the ends.

Condition it!

Conditioners, when they are good, replenish the elements your hair loses. Its important to pack in as much of those elements as possible.
• Firstly, squeeze out any excess moisture from your hair. A damp sponge is the most absorbent. Bone dry takes a while to absorb and soaking wet is already full. You want your hair damp here not dripping wet.
• Apply the conditioner over your hands and then into the lengths of your hair, squeezing occasionally as you go. Work it in from the ends towards the scalp while always using a detangling motion.
• Rinse. QUICKLY! Rinsing for to long will simply remove all of the elements you’ve been working to restore into your hair. If it is squeaky clean, apply again. Your hair should feel slightly slick still. Squeeze out the excess moisture and finish your shower.

Dry it!

With a towel first. I’m sure I will be covering how to blow dry your hair to good health… Hey that’s a great title! Anyway, keep a lookout for that one later. As I was saying…
• You’ll want to blot the moisture from your hair. Squeeze your hair lengths and compress the
towel against your head. Rubbing the nap of a terrycloth towel against your hair’s cuticle
layer will cause damage and dulness.
• Always treat your hair like an expensive fabric. Being gentle here sets your hair up for some
of the more harsh treatments of styling and battling the elements.
• Proceed to styling your hair.

If you regularly maintain your hair in a salon, even a little, you will spend hundreds to thousands of dollars every year. And you should! Your hair and it’s style is the only accessory you wear that you can’t take off in a day. It is there good or bad. It can ruin your morning or make an evening fabulous. However, you shouldn’t need to purchase or perform costly actions to “repair” or “rebuild” your hair. You can save all of that money and just start doing the steps outlined above. Over time these steps will become easy to perform habits and your cleansing/conditioning routine will take as long as it always has. Or, you can spend money on snake oil and hope for the best.

Over my career I have offered this information to clientele, people in bars and stuck next to me on public transportation. (I talk a lot!) Every single one of them has had nothing but exceptional hair health and simplified maintenance since then. Now I offer this free fix, freely, to you as well. Good Luck!

Trying to find new clients, after moving to a new city, is impossible! Not really, but it feels that way. New Hair Salon Cape Coral

I recently made a move to Cape Coral, Fl and it has been wonderful, for the most part. Don’t get me wrong. The weather and time off were much needed. However, when the search for work began, I found myself a little lost. This is pretty new to me.

Working at Jade Salon has been wonderful for the last sixteen years. Everyone there became my extended family and support system. The salon owner, John Donofrio, is my first mentor and he encouraged me to get into our industry. The salon kept me in a steady flow of new clientele for the beginning of my career. As my clientele grew so did the word of mouth referrals and before long I was sitting pretty as one of the salon’s top earners. Now I find myself without a salon and without the resources I am familiar with. So what should I do?

Ideally there was a salon to be purchased and I would walk in as a new owner. Confident and optimistic, I would raise the bar by providing education and quality control to the existing stylists and clientele. That would increase retention and sales, bringing my salon to the apex of the city’s elite salons. Well… my original plans didn’t work out. I’m okay with that. Things don’t often go exactly to plan and I enjoy the challenge of thinking on my feet and problem solving. I have some money to live off of, rent is cheap, and my family is supportive and wise. So let’s figure this out!

The Plan

Here is what I’ve come up with:

1. Get a business card – the rest of my family/business partners believed this was a must. How do I network without one? Makes sense. Check!

2. Get involved with the city – I joined the Cape Coral Chamber of Commerce Leadership 2016 program to get a better working knowledge of the city, make influential friends, and discover ways to give back to the community. So far so good, with eleven weeks to go. Check!

3. Offer complimentary and concierge haircutting/hairstyling services – This is some of what I did at the start of my career. Free haircuts are a great way to show your working knowledge and start word of mouth advertising. Just don’t go all willy-nilly (whats that even mean?) be selective. Usually you’ll be looking for influencers within your core demographic. Check!

4. Keep looking – This is where I am right now in my “new” plan. I still look for salons to buy and places to work. I am even trying to see if I can put together an educational aspect to my website and offer those services to salons in the area. Ahem… coming soon, pinky swear.

5. Don’t go it alone – Unless you have all the time, money, and positive attitude in the world. Without the support I am getting I wouldn’t have made this move. It’s scary but accomplishable. My mentor/boss gave me great support as I left, increasing my confidence. My family gives me constant reassurances and provide me the ability to take my time to do things right. Maybe this point should have gone first? Oh well, check!

First Cut

So I did connect with a fitness instructor (influencer) and offered my services. A complimentary haircut later and Gael couldn’t be happier! Soon her husband will be looking to get his haircut next. We all know how hard it is for a guy to leave his barber. I just made some recommendations that were in line with how he was already feeling about his hair. When Scott realized I could see what he needed, the switch was easy.

I explained to Gael that the difference in her naturally curly texture existed from a lack of layering. I added some layers to give a uniform curl from the base line up when worn natural. The layering will also cut down on drying time (less hair) and lighten the shape adding body and bounce when styled.

I finished her hair by blow drying with my hands, then giving a round brush feel by adding wave with a flat iron. A little bit of a light silicone sheen and some hairspray to complete her look.
